A STORY OF HLUMA HOPE
We want to tell you a heartwarming, hope-filled story of a young school learner, Rupert*, who comes to our NewDay United HLUMA homework sessions.
Rupert was one of the first children who was in our program. He really struggled when it came to maths and couldn’t read at all. With consistent work over the past few months with our facilitators, we are so proud of all he has accomplished.
We had a session with him in June 2019 before the June exams, where we gave him nursery rhythms to learn and we gave him homework of reading. This would happen on a Thursday session and then he could come in on Monday and relay the story back to us.
On the Monday he was the first one to come and proudly tell us that he had done his homework. When it came to telling us the story, he read excellently.
His marks for third term went up amazingly, for home language it went up to a code 4 and went from a code 3 to a code 5 for English. It’s an incredible jump! Amazing for a child who couldn’t read a few months ago. Maths also went up from a 3 to a 5 as well of his life skills from 40% to 60%!
We believe that this is the growth that can occur when children receive support and time.
